Therefore, this study aims to calculate species diversity and determine the conservation status of fish traded in traditional fish markets in Bali. The high demand for fish for local consumption and export has led to overfishing and increased the trade of fish that is prohibited by law and international agreements.

The tagging data may help improve stock assessment model inputs and subsequent outcomes to guide the development of science-based conservation and management measures. This may be due to the absence of a swim bladder and highly evolved heat exchanging vascular networks that may limit their niche breadth. Their occupation of shallow waters and a lack of diel vertical migrations differ markedly to the habits of oceanodromous Thunnus species. All fish moved north for distances of up to 654 km, with three fish moving to a known spawning area where their vertical movement behaviour changed abruptly. Fish primarily utilised coastal waters of 0–25 m (maximum 90 m) and water temperatures of 23–28 ☌ (17.1–28.5 ☌). Nine longtail tuna were tracked for 2–115 days with pop-up satellite archival tags off eastern Australia (27.5°S 153.4☎ to 27.5°S 153.4☎) to better understand their movements, habitat specificity, and post-capture mortality. The global catch of longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) has almost tripled over the past two decades, with recent stock assessments suggesting overexploited stocks. This paper provides a global review of biological, ecological and fishery information to provide researchers, fishery managers and policy makers with the most current information from which to begin to guide future stock assessment and the development of CMMs for longtail tuna. Few conservation and management measures (CMMs) are currently in place specifically for longtail tuna, although in recent years some coastal States, Regional Fishery Bodies, and tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organisations have begun to develop initiatives to improve the catch and biological data quality for longtail tuna and sympatric species of neritic tunas and tuna-like species. As the spawning biomass of principal tuna target species continue to decline in both the Indian and western and central Pacific Oceans, the increasing catches of longtail tuna, other neritic tunas, and seerfishes is worrisome. A sequence of stock assessments undertaken throughout the species’ range since the late 1980s persistently indicated that at least three of the four stocks defined in this paper are likely to have been, and most likely are currently, subject to overfishing and overfished as a result of excess fishing effort on this relatively slow-growing and long-lived tuna species. Catches of longtail tuna in the Indian Ocean now exceed catches of principal commercial target species, such as albacore and bigeye tunas.

Historically receiving little attention by commercial fisheries, the global annual catch of longtail tuna has steadily risen from around 30,000 t in the early 1980s to exceeding 200,000 t since 2004, reaching a peak of 291,264 t in 2007, and was 281,613 t in 2017.
